The chill was intense, but the exuberant energy coursing through my soul may have matched— or even surpassed— the vehement cold. Although I had been to Copenhagen, Denmark more than 50+ times thanks to my job as an international flight attendant, kiteboarding in cold water was not something I had experienced before. Besides freezing, it felt like magic. I was so present and aware of the fact that if I hadn't invested in learning to kite, this experience, and the people who I was meeting, would have never been available. This glee and excitement, in this moment, would have never existed.
That's one of the reasons I kite— for that feeling. For the freedom, the flow, and the fascination.
There are many reasons why I kite. As a female, the doors are so wide open for sponsorship opportunities, dates, travel experiences, and community. Males have the same chances for the aforementioned aspects kiting will bring, but with only 10 percent of kitesurfers and kiteboarders being female, the dynamic is simply different. As a single, frequent solo-traveling female, I have found kiting to be the best way to make friends, exercise while on the road, experience a destination, as well as find a date (forget Tinder).
There are many external factors like the ones listed above that I could mention as reasons why I kite, but truly, there's just something about it that internally makes me alive. I don't actually kite for the dates, the destinations, or friends.
I kite for me.
- I kite because it's the way that I can calm my mind, find my center, and connect to nature.
- I kite for the therapy of it.
- I kite because I've found a new level of confidence.
- I kite because it terrifies me. I kite because it challenges me.
- I kite because it makes me laugh and smile and grin from ear to ear.
There's simply nothing like the wind in your hair and feeling the water splash in your face.
Kiting makes me 'free.'
